Derma-planing is most often used to improve the appearance of skin scarred from acne and to smooth out small facial wrinkles, as well as to prevent dead skin buildup, which allows these imperfections to appear larger. With a derma-planing treatment, you can safely scrape away the outer layers of dead skin and “peach fuzz” to reveal smooth, clear, and undamaged skin.
How Does Dermaplaning Work?
- Dermaplaning can remove up to 2 to 3 weeks worth of rough, dead skin and build up can be performed every 3 to 4 weeks. Dermaplaning uses a specifically developed type blade to safely remove layers of dead skin. This blade is held at a 45 degree angle to the skin while your aesthetician gently moves the blade along the surface of your face and manipulates the skin with their hands. Depending upon the severity and depth at which dead and unwanted skin sits on the face the length of your treatment may range from several minutes to an hour. Deeper lines, and more severe build up of dead skin require more layers of skin to be removed.
- Dermaplaning can be performed on small, precise areas of the skin or can be applied to larger regions, including the entire face. Dermaplaning can also be performed in addition to other skin treatments, such as chemical peels or facials. This treatment also encourages the growth of new, healthy skin cells and can have a positive impact on the skin cell life-cycle. Dermaplaning is a highly effective way to resurface the skin and is a highly effective method for leveling out uneven surfaces on the face. Dermaplaning is gentle and does not break the capillaries on the face, which more aggressive exfoliators may do. This prevents skin discoloration or scarring. Since dermaplaning does not involve the application of chemicals it is a great alternative for individuals who have sensitive skin and cannot undergo chemical peels or other chemically based treatments. Dermaplaning is a non-surgical procedure and requires no recovery time nor does it produce any visible side effects.
Microneedling, also referred to in the medical world as Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT), has been cleared by the FDA for the treatment of many skin conditions.
Microneedling produces channels in the dermis which stimulate the body’s natural defenses to repair and produce concentrated amounts of collagen and proteins to the treated areas of skin. This stimulation results in a thickening of the skin by up to 80% – thereby smoothing scars, visibly reducing stretch marks and erasing wrinkles.
Although primarily used for full facial rejuvenation, this procedure can be carried out anywhere on the body, such as on stretch marks on the thighs and abdomen, and is generally safe on all skin types.
Microneedling has also been used to minimize pore size, improve surgical, traumatic, burn and acne scars and hyper-pigmentation (brown spots and Melasma). Darker skin types are usually ideal candidates for Microneedling as they are more prone to side effects from lasers. It is also ideal for patients who do not want laser treatments but want more rejuvenation than what typical peels and microdermabrasion can offer.
How does the “Micropen” work?
Enhancing rejuvenation results with much less epidermal damage, the Micro Pen introduces a series of multiple needles that vertically pierce the skin reaching the papillary dermal layer of the skin where collagen and elastin fibers are located. The automatic vibrating function of the Micropen increases the effectiveness of treatment by increasing absorption of products, while also reducing pain and discomfort.
